WCC beat St Gallen

St Gallen CC 111ao (20 overs) lost to Winterthur CC 115-6 (19.1 overs) by 4 wkts

Sportpark Deutweg, Sunday 28th June 2015

WCC met St. Gallen CC in the first of two Pickwick Cup Twenty20 games on Sunday 28th June 2015.

Tom won the toss, St. Gallen batted first on a bright and sunny day that promised good cricket weather. St. Gallen sported a familiar look to WCC as they were led by ex-winterthurian, Nasir Mahmood and also had long time WCC member, Waqar. In a nice change of strategy, Tom opened the bowling with Rod and Sara and the SGCC openers struggled to put some runs on the board with the sharp bounce and pace of Rod and the unerring accuracy of Sara pegging them back. Rod soon got the wicket of Waqar with a catch that WK and skipper Tom greedily plucked out of Hasta's reach :) .The opening bowlers completed their spells unchanged and picked up a wicket apiece while being miserly with the runs. At this juncture, Nasir and Waqar had gotten together and were trying to build a partnership that could have been dangerous for WCC. The change bowlers Pradeep and Jagath also exerted good control and kept the runs in check increasing the pressure on the batsmen. Pradeep proceeded to pick two more wickets in an excellent display of bowling. Tom then introduced Hasta who immediately produced a wicket maiden and increased pressure on Nasir, the lone remaining recognised batsman. Nasir was threatening to score big when Hasta lured him into one shot too many. The innings folded soon after with Pradeep and Hasta picking 3 wickets each and Dipi and Jagath also picking one each. WCC was left to chase a meagre 112 off 20 overs but we have faltered before for these small totals. The highlight was the catching of WCC who picked difficult chances and did not drop much and Tom had four catches to his name.

In reply, WCC started badly losing Callum almost immediately. However Prafull joined Jagath in the middle and they endured a pacy opening spell picking off singles and cracking the odd boundary to keep the scoreboard ticking. Praful was in murderous intent and had a point to prove to both his own team members and also to a couple of the opposition players. Once Jagath was out, Praful started dictating terms to the opposition bowlers scoring boundaries at will. However, there was not much support from the other end as Mahmood, Sara, Tom and Rod making quick exits for not many runs. The innings was heading to a tense finish with almost 40 runs required off the last 6 overs. Pradeep provided able support to Prafull and scored a couple of crucial boundaries while Praful continued his dictating form and the pair scored the required runs by the 20th over leading to big celebrations as it was the first win of the season in a competitive fixture (not counting the all important Zuoz win, of course.). Prafull top scored with a great knock of 60 not out to add to his 2 brilliant catches and would be the Captain's man of the match.
