Winterthur Cricket Club suffered a heartbreaking four-run defeat against Basel Afghan CC in a closely contested Pickwick Cup encounter in Solothurn. After a disciplined bowling performance restricted Basel Afghan CC to 132, Winterthur looked well placed in the chase before regular wickets halted their momentum, leaving the team just short of the target.

🔴 Bowling Restricts Basel Afghan CC

After winning the toss, Basel Afghan CC elected to bat first and made an explosive start. Abdullah Hamdard and Abdulbasir Zaman attacked from the outset, racing to 52 runs in less than three overs. Zaman was particularly destructive, smashing 34 from just 11 deliveries, while Hamdard added a rapid 25.

Winterthur responded brilliantly once the opening partnership was broken. Captain Harsha Deshan struck first before Burhanullah Mia Khel removed two key batters to shift the momentum back towards WCC.

The standout performance came from Suresh Wickramasinghe, who delivered a superb spell of 4 wickets for just 18 runs. His wickets of Samim Mayar, Farmanullah Safi, Amjad Rahmani and Akhtar Ali Dargai triggered a dramatic collapse in the middle overs. Purusothman Karunakaran chipped in with two wickets, while Karunakaran Nirojan claimed the final wicket as Basel Afghan CC were bowled out for 132 in 16.5 overs.

Winterthur’s reply began in the worst possible fashion, with Karunakaran Nirojan dismissed from the fourth ball of the innings. Harsha Deshan briefly counterattacked with 17 from 11 balls, but back-to-back wickets left WCC under pressure.

Usman Ahmadzai then produced an outstanding innings, anchoring the chase with 49 from just 32 balls, including five fours and three sixes. His aggressive stroke play kept Winterthur in the hunt and carried the score to 88 before his dismissal proved to be a crucial turning point.

Thuvarahan Karunakaran contributed a valuable 24, while Kamran Otmanzai added 10 lower down the order. However, Basel Afghan CC’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with Samim Mayar claiming four wickets and Sayed Helal picking up three.

Needing five runs from the final over, Winterthur fought until the very end but were eventually restricted to 128/9 in 18.5 overs, falling agonisingly short by just four runs.
