Winterthur Cricket Club produced a spirited performance in the Cricket Switzerland National League (CSNL), falling just 24 runs short against Geneva International CC at Bout du Monde. Set a formidable target after Geneva posted 300, Winterthur responded with an explosive chase led by captain Harsha Deshan, eventually reaching 276 in 39.3 overs.

Bowling Restricts Geneva International CC

Geneva won the toss and elected to bat, with Nishan Khan providing the defining innings of their total. After Balaji Ramamoorthy fell for 18 with the score on 97, Khan continued his assault, producing a remarkable 117 from just 66 balls with 10 fours and 10 sixes. His innings propelled Geneva to 166 before Suresh Wickramasinghe finally made the crucial breakthrough.

That wicket triggered Winterthur’s strongest period of the innings. Suresh struck repeatedly through the middle order, removing Momand Negarullah and Ramesh Tripathi, while combining with Harsha Deshan to run out Geneva captain Habib Choudhury. Geneva slipped from 166/1 to 189/5 as Winterthur fought their way back into the contest.

Mayur Padhye, however, rebuilt the innings with an unbeaten 66 from 49 balls, including five fours and five sixes. Suresh finished with four wickets, while Riaz Ahmadzai and Burhanullah Mia Khel claimed two each as Geneva were eventually dismissed for exactly 300 in 44.2 overs.

Faced with a daunting chase, Winterthur responded spectacularly. Harsha Deshan and Pio De Silva launched an extraordinary opening assault, racing to 114 before Pio departed for 37 from 30 balls.

Harsha was simply sensational. The Winterthur captain smashed 89 from only 39 deliveries at a strike rate of 228.21, hammering 15 fours and four sixes. When he fell at 140/2 after just 13.2 overs, Winterthur had given themselves a genuine opportunity to chase down 301.

Usman Ahmadzai kept the chase alive with 34, while Riaz Ahmadzai contributed 29 and Suresh Wickramasinghe added 20. However, regular wickets gradually shifted the momentum back towards Geneva. From 188/3, Winterthur slipped to 218/6, leaving the lower order with too much to recover.

Winterthur continued fighting until the end, but Geneva’s Almas Halimi and Kirithran Mayuran claimed three wickets each to close out the innings at 276 in 39.3 overs. It was a brave chase that ultimately fell 24 runs short, but one that demonstrated Winterthur’s determination to attack even the most imposing targets.
